You’ve been fired, and so what? The main question on your lips should be “what next?” People get fired everyday on the whims of silly employers, and many shall still be fired before the end of today for faults no one is ready to admit to. It is true, suddenly being fired from your job without prior warnings could be devastating enough, but it is not the end of the world. Many people have been galvanized into founding their own successful businesses after disengaged from their former workplaces, and many others are actually the better for it today.
What then must you do if you suddenly find yourself fired from your job? Well, you got to be calm and put on your thinking cap without necessarily letting anybody that comes across you on the streets know what has just befallen you. Just take the following steps and things shall soon start to take shape for you again –
1. Don’t be rash or do anything silly: This cannot be emphasised enough. You must remain calm and collected in spite of your calamity, and be ready to face life for what it has dealt you. Put on your thinking cap and look for ways to better the situation; look for ways to make the best of your trouble by being calm, cool, and collected. Don’t be bitter or you might do something silly, and there’s no point trying to get back at your former employer until you fully analyse the situation and see how things stand.
2. Reach out to your former employer: It might be great and helpful to ask your former employer for recommendations to future employers. You might ask your former employer to be neutral and objective if future employers happen to get back to him for recommendations, and to be helpful by making you marketable to other employers again.
3. Review your budgets: It is time to pare down on your finances and only obtain basic essentials if you ever need to spend money at all. You don’t know for sure how long you’d be out of a job, and it is only reasonable and economical to review your finances and cut down on unnecessary expenses so as to make your savings reach out much longer till you get some form of employment.
4. Get in touch with the necessary people: Now is the time to get in touch with people from your past – colleagues from your former workplace, customers you have managed, vendors you have sold to, suppliers you have used, friends in other industries, professional buddies and well-placed family members.
5. Review what led to your sack: It might be necessary to review events that led to your sack and see how to make the most of the situation. You must see what went wrong and how to improve on things to make yourself marketable and well-favoured again with employers.
6. Consider launching out by yourself: If you got some special talents and professional skills that are in great demand, you might consider setting up your personal business and pursuing your own dreams. You may team up with other qualified partners or go solo, but ensure that you do your due diligence before starting out on any desired business and don’t forget to make consultations where necessary to guide you along the journey to success.
